Ish-tenisti numër një në botë, Marat Safin, i ka dhënë fund karrierës së tij në US Open, duke u thyer nga austriaku Jurgen Melzes në Louis Armstrong Stadium.

29-vjeçari rus, fitues i dyfishtë i titujve Grand Slam, humbi në katër sete ndaj austriakut; edhe pse doli fitues bindës në të parin, ai humbi tre setet e radhës (1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4).
