Pranë Sarandës gjendet qyteti antik ilir "Onchesmos", i përmendur si port në shekullin e parë para Krishtit. Në shekullin e IV pas Krishtit, qyteti u rrethua me mure mbrojtës. Brenda tyre u gjetën gërmadha banesash, cisterna uji dhe një Bazilikë e hershme Kristiane e shekullit V-VI e cila përmban një mozaik shumëngjyrësh. Mozaik të tjerë gjenden në muzeun e rrethit. Gjithashtu janë ruajtur rrënojat e një Manastiri Kristian, ai i 40 shenjtorëve, nga i cili merr emrin Saranda e sotme.
Monumente të ndryshme dhe gjetje arkeologjike nga qyteti janë zbuluar gjatë shumë viteve kërkimi si: sinagoga/bazilika, një pjesë e një harku perandorak romak, një shtëpi e antikitetit të vonë, një ndërtesë apsidale, një Odeon, një varrezë dhe një ndërtesë me mozaik të përsosur i ashtuquajtur "Dyshemeja e Delfinit".AKT
