I mbyllur per te huajt per shekuj me rradhe, Afganistani u hap per here te pare ne vitin 1931, aq sa per te lejuar nje ekspedite shkencore te National Geographic per te kryer disa vezhgime dhe fotografime.

Duke perdorur automjete te pershtatshme per rruge te veshtira, ekspedita ishte e para qe kreu nje kalim me automjete nga Mesdheu ne Detin e Verdhe.

Kur grupi mberriti ne luginen mahnitese Bamian te Afganistanit, drejtuesi i ekspedites se National Geographic, Maynard Owen Williams mori nje aparat fotografik te madh dhe beri fotografine e pare me ngjyra te dy statujave Budiste gjigande te shekullit te VI qe ndodheshin ne zgavrat shkembore.

Arkeologjisti afgan Zemaryali Tarzi u zemerua kur ne vitin 2001 qeveria talibane i shkaterroi dy statujat. Keshtu ai filloi kerkimin per statujen e trete: Buddha e fjetur e varrosur e Bamian-it, qe sipas teksteve te lashta, ajo eshte rreth 305 m e gjate.

Deri tani ai ka gjetur copezat e nje skulpture te vogel te ngjashme ne nje tempull aty prane por vazhdon kerkimet e tij per skulpturen me te madhe.
